Havertz and Saka Have It Wrapped Up Inside 23 Minutes
Five days after lifting the Community Shield, Arsenal just carried straight on. Havertz opened the scoring after 14 minutes, pounced on sloppy play from Van Ewijk, Calafiori found him, first-time finish into the far corner. Genuinely fine goal. Coventry, playing their first-ever Premier League game after promotion, barely had time to catch their breath before it was 2-0 — Tzolis, making his full Emirates debut and causing trouble all afternoon, had a low shot parried by Rushworth, and Saka rolled the rebound into an empty net. Two goals inside half an hour.
Coventry had a busy summer on paper — Awoniyi, Hamer, Onyeka, Bentley, plenty of recognizable names in the door — but none of it showed here. Arsenal controlled every phase of the game. By halftime it already felt over.
Ødegaard Makes It Three Just After the Break
Didn’t let up after the break either. Four minutes in, Saka and White link up down the right, typical stuff from those two, White gets to the byline and cuts it back for Ødegaard. Finish was scuffed off both feet, honestly, but it spun awkwardly enough past Rushworth anyway. 3-0. Second goal in as many games for Ødegaard — first time he’s scored in back-to-back matches since December 2023.
Game was done at that point, so Arteta used the rest of it to manage his squad. Rice and Saka, both just back from a long World Cup, came off after 69 minutes for Zubimendi and Madueke. Merino and Eze followed soon after for Ødegaard and Tzolis — the Greek winger got a warm ovation on his way off after a genuinely eye-catching debut. He’d gone close himself too, 20-yard effort that Rushworth did well to save. Coventry kept fighting but never really troubled Raya at the other end, and Arsenal closed it out without much fuss.
What It Means Next
Perfect start to the title defence, right on the back of beating Man City in the Community Shield. Frank Leboeuf’s already out there saying Arsenal have “no other contenders” this season, for what that’s worth this early. For Coventry, tough way to get introduced to Premier League pace — not exactly a rare story for newly promoted sides walking into the Emirates against the reigning champs on opening day.
