That was the difference. Fenerbahçe hold a one-goal lead going into the second leg in Poland on July 29.
Narrow. Not comfortable. But an advantage.
The Goal
Fred broke fast from midfield. Found Talisca. Talisca took a touch and hit a left-footed shot from outside the box. It went in.
VAR reviewed it. Nothing wrong. Goal confirmed.
For a Fenerbahçe side that had scored 11 goals in three pre-season wins under İsmail Kartal, one goal in the first home leg felt modest. But the goal was clean. The shape was right. The result is what matters.
Talisca had already missed one chance in the 14th minute — drove wide after creating the first clear opportunity of the night. He made up for it twenty-three minutes later.
Górnik Zabrze Competed
They were not here to sit in and absorb. Erik Janža tested Mert Günok in the 16th minute — left-footed shot from the left side of the box, Günok saved it well into the top corner. Janža had been set up by Erik Prekop on a good counter.
Maksym Khlan had a right-footed effort from outside the box blocked. Yvan Ikia Dimi won free kicks. Kacper Urbański — the young midfielder who had been one of the Ekstraklasa’s standout players last season — was competitive in midfield throughout.
Górnik Zabrze finished second in the Polish Ekstraklasa this season and won the Polish Cup. First time back in major European qualifying since 2018. They showed enough at the Chobani Stadium to suggest the second leg in Zabrze will be difficult.
What Fenerbahçe Did Right and Wrong
Right — kept the ball well in the second half after making changes. Asensio came on at 68 minutes for Elmaz. Oğuz Aydın replaced Kerem Aktürkoğlu at the same time. The shape was maintained. No second goal conceded. Clean sheet.
Wrong — could not add to the lead. Mert Günok was busy at his end — had to save from Janža, dealt with corners. Górnik had moments where the aggregate could have been levelled. In the second leg in Poland that cannot happen.
Kartal made one first-half substitution — Levent Mercan replaced Nathan Aké at half-time. Whether Aké carried a knock or whether it was tactical is unclear. But Fenerbahçe needed to protect what they had in the second half and managed it.
Górnik Zabrze Go Home With a Chance
One goal separates the clubs. The second leg is at Arena Zabrze in Silesia. Górnik know how to play at home. Their fans turn up for European nights.
Score in the first minute next week and suddenly Fenerbahçe are under pressure. Górnik know that. They proved on Tuesday they can create chances against a Turkish top side.
Fenerbahçe know that too. The 1-0 lead is enough to go to Poland with. It is not enough to relax.
The winner of this tie faces the winner of Sturm Graz vs Hearts — which after the 4-0 first leg will almost certainly be Sturm Graz.
