Piccoli. 39 minutes. Goal. 1-0 Fiorentina.
Comuzzo. His own net. 82nd minute. 1-1.
That is the match. That is the season.
Atalanta needed a point to secure Conference League football. A draw at Florence was enough. They got it the strangest way possible — a Fiorentina defender putting the ball past his own goalkeeper eight minutes from time.
Gasperini knew what it meant immediately. His players did too.
First Half Belonged to Fiorentina
Atalanta came to Franchi in poor form. Four defeats in their last six. Lost 1-0 to Bologna last weekend. Confidence not high.
Fiorentina beat Juventus 2-0 last time out. Piccoli scoring in that one too. He scored in this one. 39th minute. Three shots in the match. One on goal. That one went in.
Lezzerini in goal for Fiorentina had five saves across 90 minutes. Atalanta tried. Didn’t convert. Went in at half-time trailing.
Gasperini Changed Everything at the Break
Five substitutions at half-time. Zappacosta on. Bellanova moved. De Ketelaere later in the 62nd. Djimsiti and Kolasinac in defence. The whole shape shifted.
Atalanta had 60.5% of the ball in the second half. Eight corners. Sixteen total shot attempts against Fiorentina’s seven. The pressure built.
Then the 82nd minute. Ball into the Fiorentina box. Comuzzo went to clear it. Wrong direction. Wrong net. 1-1.
He stood there for a second. Hands up. Nothing to say.
What It Means
Atalanta seventh. 58 points. Conference League confirmed.
Fiorentina 14th. 41 points. Season over.
Both clubs end the campaign with a point from today. Not what either planned at the start of the season. Atalanta had ambitions beyond seventh when the year started. Fiorentina wanted to be higher than 14th.
Football happens. Seasons don’t always go the way you want.
De Gea — former Manchester United — came on as substitute goalkeeper for Fiorentina in the 87th. Did not need to do much. Lezzerini had already done the work.
Atalanta won the first meeting this season 2-0 back in November. The double over Fiorentina didn’t happen. An own goal gave them a draw instead of three points. Good enough.
