Two clubs going in completely different directions met at NP3 Arena on Monday evening. By full time, the gap between them looked even wider than the table already suggested.
Östers IF won 4-0. Comfortably. Convincingly. The kind of result that tells you everything about where each club currently sits in the Superettan hierarchy.
Sundsvall came into the match already battling relegation worry. They had collected just nine points from their first eleven league rounds, sitting three points behind the safety line. A 1-0 road win over Örebro the previous Wednesday had at least ended a negative run, but the underlying problems — a defence that has struggled all season and an attack that has gone quiet for long stretches — were never going to disappear after one good result.
Öster arrived as one of the Superettan’s genuine promotion contenders. Different ambitions entirely. Different level of performance on the night too.
This fixture has not been kind to the home side in recent history. Sundsvall’s last home win against Öster came back in 2014. Eleven years without beating their visitors at NP3 Arena. Going into Monday, Sundsvall had won precisely none of their last five meetings with Öster in all competitions, with Öster taking four of those and one ending level. The pattern continued.
The away side’s record in this fixture is built on more than history. Linus Carlstrand has scored six times for Öster this season — comfortably their most reliable source of goals — and his presence in the final third gave Sundsvall’s defence problems they could not solve all evening. Hugo Aviander, Sundsvall’s top scorer with three goals, found himself starved of service as his side struggled to get out of their own half for long periods.
The match followed a pattern that will be painfully familiar to Sundsvall supporters this season. Öster controlled the tempo, created openings, and converted enough of them to make the result a formality well before the closing stages. The four goals across the match meant Öster’s away form continues to look the more reliable of the two sides this season. Sundsvall, by contrast, have now failed to score in one of their last six home matches and the goal difference at NP3 Arena is becoming a real concern heading into the second half of the campaign.
For Sundsvall, the picture is genuinely worrying. Three points adrift of safety before kick-off, the gap will not have shrunk after Monday’s result elsewhere in the division. Ion Doros Guler’s side need to find consistency quickly or the drop back to Ettan becomes a real threat heading into the second half of the season.
For Öster, the win keeps their promotion push on track. Their head-to-head dominance over Sundsvall now extends across the last four meetings without defeat, and performances like Monday’s suggest they have the quality to be competing near the top of the Superettan table when the season reaches its conclusion.
