Győri ETO Held 2-2 by Vikingur as Icelanders Advance on Aggregate

Győri ETO vs Vikingur Reykjavik

Győri ETO’s Champions League run is done for another summer. They came back from a first-leg loss to draw 2-2 with Vikingur Reykjavik at ETO Park on Tuesday, and for a while it genuinely looked like they might turn the whole tie around. Wasn’t quite enough, though. Vikingur go through 3-2 on aggregate and move on to the next round of qualifying.

Everyone knew what Győri needed coming into this one. They’d lost 1-0 away in Reykjavik the week before without even putting a shot on target, which is about as flat as a European away leg gets. New boss Efraín Juárez clearly told his players to go for it from minute one, and for a spell that plan looked shaky. Vikingur actually scored first — Daníel Hafsteinsson again, 34th minute, the guy just keeps showing up in the games that matter — and suddenly Győri needed two goals just to get level on aggregate, not one.

Credit to them, they got the response going. Four minutes before the break, Milán Vitális smashed home a penalty to level things up on the night, and the home end went off. Then, right at the death of the first half, they got a bit of good fortune too — Vikingur defender Sveinn Thorkelsson turned a cross into his own net trying to clear it, and just like that Győri were 2-1 up and level on aggregate for the first time in the whole tie.

Didn’t last long. Vikingur regrouped at the break, came out sharper, and Gylfi Sigurdsson — still the one pulling strings for them at his age — curled in a lovely equalizer in the 55th minute. 2-2, and crucially Vikingur were back ahead on aggregate again. Győri threw what they had left at it. Nfansu Njie was a real handful up top, five shots to his name by full time, but none of them found a way past a Vikingur defense that just refused to break a second time.

Funny thing is, Győri were actually the better side across the ninety — 12 shots to 9, more of the ball, more time in Vikingur’s half. None of that counts for anything on aggregate, though. Sölvi Ottesen’s Vikingur move on into the next qualifying round having now won 19 of 24 matches in 2026, a run that’s carried them a long way from home. For Győri, it’s back to domestic football — as UEFA’s own coverage of the tie makes clear, their European adventure ends here, and they’ll turn their attention to defending the league title they only just won on the final day last season.
