A news explainer can be difficult to picture long before it is difficult to produce.
The reporting may be solid and the script nearly finished, yet basic visual questions remain. Does the opening need a map or a scene-setting shot? Can an abstract process be explained in 20 seconds? Will a transition clarify the story or simply make it busier?
Storyboards and animatics already help answer those questions. Generative video adds another option: a temporary moving draft that editors, reporters, designers and producers can review before final assets are made.
For a newsroom, that may be one of the more practical uses of the technology. The draft is not reporting and does not need to become published footage. It is there to test an idea.
Why Previsualization Helps With Explainers
Take a story about a proposed urban transport network.
The reporting team may have route data, planning documents, maps, interviews and a finished outline. The video team still has to decide how to explain the proposal without making it look more certain or complete than it really is.
A storyboard can show composition. A script can establish timing. Neither always makes it obvious how several visual ideas will feel when they run together.
A short moving prototype can expose problems early. Perhaps the opening is too slow. Perhaps an animated city scene makes a proposal look like completed infrastructure. Perhaps a route map explains the same point more accurately in half the time.
That is the useful role of previsualization: finding those problems while the visual direction is still easier to reconsider.
What Seedance 2.5 Adds

Those capabilities are relevant to previsualization because an explainer is rarely built from a prompt alone. A team may already have an internally produced diagram, approved illustration, storyboard frame, motion reference or other cleared material that defines part of the visual direction.
That does not mean a newsroom should fill every available reference slot. Editorial teams have different concerns from commercial creators: source protection, copyright, embargoes and confidential material all matter.
The useful question is not how much material can be uploaded, but how little is needed to test the visual idea clearly.
A Five-Step Newsroom Workflow
Consider the transport story again. Before designers build the final graphics or editors start assembling authenticated footage, the team wants to test one difficult section of the explainer.
A workable process might look like this.
1. Lock the Reporting First
Start with verified reporting, not generation.
The editor and reporter should agree on the central claim, supporting facts, known uncertainties and the distinction between what has happened, what has been proposed and what remains speculative.
This matters especially for stories involving policy, infrastructure, science or forecasts. A convincing visualization can make an uncertain outcome feel settled. A proposed railway, for example, should not appear to be a completed railway unless its hypothetical status is unmistakable.
2. Break the Script Into Visual Beats
Turn the relevant section of the script into a small number of visual jobs:
- establish the current transport problem;
- show the concept behind the proposal;
- move into a verified route map;
- explain the expected effect using newsroom-produced data graphics.
The prototype does not need to generate every part.
Final maps, charts, labels, numerical claims and interface demonstrations should come from verified newsroom graphics, data and source material rather than details invented inside a generated scene. Software explainers should use authentic interface material where accuracy matters, while scientific visualizations should be checked by an appropriate subject expert.
Generation is better used here to test pacing, transitions, framing and visual metaphors.
3. Use Cleared, Non-Sensitive References
Reference inputs need the same editorial care as published assets.
Useful materials might include internally created diagrams, synthetic or illustrated style references, approved storyboard frames and properly cleared visual references. If audio is needed for timing, internally created, non-identifying temporary narration or properly cleared audio references are safer choices.
Unpublished interviews, source recordings, identifiable voices, confidential newsroom materials and embargoed assets should not be uploaded unless the platform, rights and newsroom security policies explicitly permit it.
JXP’s current workflow does not support real human faces, portraits, celebrity likenesses or copyrighted content. Newsrooms should therefore avoid uploading photographs of public figures, interview subjects, reporters or other identifiable people, as well as copyrighted footage or imagery.
A reference library created specifically for previsualization is safer than treating the newsroom’s general archive as an input library.
4. Make a Draft That Is Expected to Change
Now generate the prototype. It may be rough. That is fine.
The editor may discover that the first six seconds add nothing. The reporter may notice that a visual metaphor changes the meaning of a fact. The designer may conclude that a simple chart would work better than an elaborate generated scene.
A science desk might use a generated sequence to test the rhythm of an explanation while keeping the actual scientific diagram and labels outside the generated scene. A technology desk might test movement around an abstract representation of a system but use real screenshots when the final explainer discusses the interface itself.
The prototype is a planning object, not a source.
5. Review It as a Team
Different newsroom roles should look for different problems.
The reporter checks factual meaning. The editor looks at context and possible misinterpretation. The designer considers whether the visual device clarifies the information. The producer judges pacing and whether the idea is sensible to make.
The result may be a revised storyboard rather than another generation. That is still a successful outcome.
Keep Synthetic Material Separate From News Assets
Internal use does not remove the need for provenance.
A practical newsroom policy could label every prototype clearly:

Generated drafts should be stored separately from authenticated photographs, video, graphics and source material. Teams should retain enough information to identify how a prototype was made, including relevant prompts and references, and set an appropriate retention or deletion period.
The draft should not enter the normal newsroom asset library or publishing system simply because it looks convincing. If it is later shared with a freelancer, production partner or another department, permissions and source material should be checked again.
Moving any generated element from internal planning into a publishable asset should trigger a new editorial review.
Drawing the Line Around Synthetic Scenes
A useful distinction is based on how generated material could be interpreted.
Internal planning uses can include abstract motion tests, pacing experiments, graphic transitions and synthetic environments created only to explore an idea. Copyright, factual accuracy, confidentiality and data security still apply.
High-scrutiny illustrative uses include historical reconstructions, recognizable locations, forecasts, proposed infrastructure and future scenarios. A visualization of a proposal or forecast should not suggest that an outcome is approved, funded, certain or expected to occur exactly as shown. If such material reaches publication, it needs clear labelling and supporting context.
Never documentary evidence is the firmest rule. Generated scenes involving breaking news, disasters, protests, conflicts or real people must never be presented as evidence or authenticated coverage. Some newsrooms may reasonably choose to keep such generated material out of their workflows entirely.
The closer a generated scene looks to documentary footage, the more cautious the newsroom should be.
Where Seedance 2.5 Previsualization Fits Best
The approach is most useful when a story contains something that is difficult to show directly.
A science team might need to work out the sequence around a microscopic process. A business desk may be explaining how goods move through a supply chain. A climate reporter may need to connect a physical process with maps and verified data. An infrastructure team may want to show the logic of a proposal without presenting the proposal as reality.

Keep Verified Assets in Charge of the Facts
Previsualization should not blur the line between an illustrative draft and the material carrying the factual weight of a story.
Maps should use verified boundaries, locations and routes. Charts should use checked numbers. Labels and dates should come from newsroom source material. Interface demonstrations should rely on authentic screens where the interface itself is part of the claim. Scientific processes should be reviewed for accuracy rather than accepted because a generated sequence looks plausible.
That leaves generative video with a narrower but useful job: testing rhythm, staging, transitions and ways of making an idea easier to follow.
Reporters establish what is true. Editors decide what could mislead. Designers turn verified information into accurate visual communication. Producers decide how those pieces work together.
Previsualization gives them another draft to argue with.
A Draft the Audience May Never See
The most useful generated clip in a newsroom may never reach the audience.
It may show that a transition does not work, that a visual metaphor is misleading or that a conventional graphic explains the story more clearly. It may simply give a reporter and designer a common reference before the final sequence is developed.
That is enough.
