A Bright Start Wasted
Kaizer Chiefs came into this one with real momentum, fresh off a convincing 3-1 win over newly-promoted Kruger United to open their league season, and marking their return to the MTN8 after a two-year absence from the competition. For a good chunk of the first half, it looked like the perfect platform for a big statement. Chiefs started on the front foot at FNB Stadium, working a slick passing move inside the first quarter hour that carved Arrows open, only for the final ball to Luke Baartman to be cut out at the last moment by goalkeeper Edward Maova. Lebohang Maboe and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo both had good sights of goal too, missing chances that on another day might have put the home side firmly in control.
Golden Arrows, for their part, were still finding their feet under new head coach Pitso Dladla, who’d taken over from Manqoba Mngqithi in the summer and whose competitive debut in charge had ended in a goalless draw against Chippa United. There wasn’t much to suggest an upset was brewing during that opening 45 minutes — Chiefs dominated the ball and the territory, and Brandon Petersen in the Chiefs goal had only one save of real note to make. It stayed goalless at the break, but the balance of play strongly favored the home side.
Shezi’s Moment Changes Everything
The turning point arrived in the 53rd minute, and it came from an unlikely source. Khulekani Shezi, a defender rather than an out-and-out attacker, whipped in a cross from the right flank that seemed to catch Petersen completely off guard — the Chiefs goalkeeper appeared to misjudge the flight of the ball entirely, and it sailed past him into the far corner. Golden Arrows were ahead, against the run of play and against most people’s expectations, and suddenly the whole complexion of the match shifted.
Chiefs threw everything they had at finding an equaliser from there. Wave after wave of pressure came forward, with Thabiso Monyane beating his man on the right only to see his low cross intercepted, and substitute Mduduzi Shabalala firing over from a promising position in the 89th minute as the writing increasingly appeared on the wall. Nothing seemed to fall for the home side, though — the finishing that had let them down in the first half continued to let them down after Shezi’s goal too. Arrows, to their credit, defended their slim lead with real composure, mixing solid organisation at the back with the occasional dangerous break of their own; Philani Khumalo nearly doubled the lead late on with a whipped cross that Petersen did well to keep out, and there was still time for another Arrows sub, Dion, to go agonisingly close with an effort that trailed just wide in the closing minutes.
What It Means Next
It’s a result that will sting Chiefs fans especially hard given the circumstances — a long-awaited return to a competition they’d missed for two seasons, ending at the very first hurdle, with new head coach Fernando Da Cruz picking up his first defeat in charge. The numbers back up the frustration too: Chiefs dominated large stretches of the game but simply couldn’t turn pressure into goals, extending an unwanted run in the MTN8 where they remain, remarkably, the only team yet to find the net in this season’s competition. For Golden Arrows, it’s a genuinely famous scalp to kickstart their campaign under Dladla, and Abafana Bes’thende now progress into a two-legged semi-final against Mamelodi Sundowns, joining Orlando Pirates and Sekhukhune United — who meet in the other semi-final — in the final four of the competition.
