Sundowns 1–1 Chiefs: Adams Sees Red as Title Race Tightens

Mamelodi Sundowns vs Kaizer Chiefs

Sundowns Needed Three Points. They Got One.

Pirates won on Tuesday. Gap cut to two points. Sundowns needed to win Wednesday to restore breathing room.

Kaizer Chiefs had other ideas.

Lilepo scored in the 25th. Brayan Leon equalised in the 54th. Jayden Adams got sent off with ten minutes left. Petersen saved Rayners’ header in stoppage time. 1-1.

Sundowns are top on 65 points. Pirates on 62 — with a game in hand. Win that against Magesi on Saturday and Pirates go top on goal difference. Three games left. The title is not over. Not even close.

Cupido Off in 15 Minutes. Then Chiefs Scored.

Sundowns were moving well early. Modiba tested Petersen from the left wing inside the opening minutes — a powerful strike that Petersen saved well.

Then Ndlovu went in on Cupido. Studs up. Shoulder. Cupido went down and did not get up. Stretchered off with what looked like a collarbone injury. Ndlovu walked away with a yellow. Cardoso was livid on the touchline. Kekana came on.

That disrupted Sundowns completely. The rhythm gone. Chiefs grew into it.

Twenty-fifth minute — Shabalala played Lilepo in with a through ball. Lilepo’s shot was powerful but low and central. It slipped under Williams, struck the upright, and crossed the line. Unfortunate for the goalkeeper. Chiefs ahead.

Shabalala then went off himself — landed awkwardly after a robust Adams challenge, reportedly dislocating his shoulder. Two players stretchered off in the same game. The referee had his hands full.

Leon Equalised. Adams Did Not Help.

Sundowns pushed. The equaliser came in the 54th. Brayan Leon worked his way through two Chiefs defenders and finished. 1-1.

After that Sundowns looked for the winner. Petersen had to be sharp. He was. Modiba again. Matthews. Allende finding pockets.

Then Adams — second yellow. Simulation. Sundowns down to ten men with ten minutes left. Exactly the worst possible time.

Chiefs had a man advantage and a chance to steal it. They could not. Frequent stoppages disrupted the momentum every time they built something. The Loftus crowd grew more frustrated with each passing minute.

Petersen. Stoppage Time. Brilliant.

Rayners came on as a substitute. Deep into stoppage time he rose highest and powered a header toward goal. The kind of chance that wins titles.

Petersen got across. Brilliant save. Drew the draw.

The whistle blew. Chiefs celebrated like they had won something. They had — they handed Pirates the initiative in the title race, which is exactly what Pirates supporters wanted.

Hugo Broos was in the stands watching. He saw Petersen keep a clean record under pressure and Cupido stretchered off with a potential collarbone injury that could affect both his CAF Champions League involvement and World Cup preparations next month. That last detail will keep Broos awake tonight.

Pirates Are Now Favourites

Three points separate the top two. Pirates have a game in hand.

Win Saturday against Magesi and Pirates go top on goal difference with two games left. Sundowns would then need to win their remaining fixtures just to stay level.

What looked like a procession toward Sundowns’ ninth consecutive title four weeks ago is anything but that now. Back-to-back dropped points. Richards Bay drew them. Kaizer Chiefs held them. Pirates winning their games.

The script has changed again. It keeps changing. That is why people watch.
