Bruno Fernandes had a message for the fans after the whistle at Old Trafford: this one was for them. Hat-trick, and a nervy, mistake-filled afternoon turned into a party. Michael Carrick’s side came from behind, beat Ipswich 5-2, first league win of the season finally on the board.
“We knew we lost three points last week and we wanted to give our fans a lot because they’ve been waiting a long time for this,” Fernandes said afterward. “I think we were in control of the game even though we conceded a goal.”
Didn’t look that way early on, though. Ipswich, riding a bit of confidence from Hull’s opening-weekend win over United, stunned Old Trafford — Leif Davis, 29th minute, 0-1. For a spell there, Gary O’Neil’s newly-promoted side looked totally comfortable. Organized at the back, sharp on the break. United needed something, and Fernandes delivered right before the break — 40th minute, 1-1, level at the interval.
Whatever nerves were left evaporated after the restart. Jacob Greaves turned one into his own net in the 56th — not without some controversy either, replays suggesting Harry Maguire might’ve handled it in the build-up before it deflected home. Five minutes later, Victor Cunha gets hauled down in the box, penalty, and Fernandes steps up himself. 3-1. Real distance now between the two sides. Hat-trick complete by the 68th, Bryan Mbeumo made it five in the 82nd, and by that point the scoreline had gone from close to emphatic. Akpom grabbed one back for Ipswich deep into stoppage time. Didn’t change much at that stage.
Maguire wasn’t hiding from how much last week’s defeat had stung either. “The goal knocked us back a lot,” he said of Davis’s early strike. “The defeat last week was tough to take. When you lose at this club there’s a lot of noise.”
United move to 1-0-1, goal difference plus one. Ipswich level on points but sitting at minus two. Tough follow-up for Ipswich too — Liverpool at home on Friday. United head to Everton before their Champions League campaign kicks off against Sabah.
