RB Leipzig 3–1 Union Berlin: Comfortable Win at Red Bull Arena (Bundesliga MD31)

RB Leipzig vs Union Berlin

Rønnow Went Off. It Was Already Over.

Frederik Rønnow had been Union’s whole first half. Double save inside ten minutes. Another stop before the break. He was the reason this stayed close for as long as it did.

Then he went off injured at half-time. Carl Klaus came on. The man had not played competitively in nearly two years.

Already 2-0. Did not matter who was in goal.

Three Minutes That Decided Everything

Leipzig had been pushing since the first whistle. Rønnow kept saying no. Then the 22nd minute arrived.

Finkgräfe got the ball, drove at the defence, and finished. 1-0. Straightforward. The kind of goal that looks simple until you try to do it in a Bundesliga game with everything on the line.

Three minutes later — Querfeld. Union’s own centre-back tried to head the ball back to Rønnow. Did not get enough on it. Rômulo read it before anyone else moved, nipped in, lifted it over the keeper. 2-0.

Rønnow did not know whether to be angry or embarrassed. Querfeld just stared at the ground. Both feelings were fair.

Two goals. Three minutes. Half-time still 20 minutes away. Done.

Second Half Was Maintenance

Klaus came on and actually held himself together well. Tipped a Baumgartner header onto the crossbar — decent stop for someone who had been out that long. But Leipzig were not losing this.

Baku added the third on 63 minutes. Leipzig moving the ball quickly, cutting through Union’s shape without much resistance. 3-0.

Doekhi got one back in the 78th with a header from a corner. Seven goals this season from centre-back — from centre-back. There are clubs all over Europe taking notes. Tonight’s performance with the ball was not his finest but that goal reminded everyone he exists.

3-1 at the final whistle. Numbers do not lie. Leipzig were better in every area.

Leipzig Are Going Back to the Champions League

Third place. 62 points. Four games left. Hoffenheim are fifth, five points behind.

Ole Werner does not need to say it out loud. Everyone in that dressing room already knows. Two more wins and it is confirmed. Probably one, depending on what happens around them.

For Union, eleventh place and 35 points is where they sit. Marie-Louise Eta — the first woman to manage a men’s side in Europe’s top five leagues — could not find a way into this game. Not many teams could have on this night. Union are safe. Just outclassed on the night.

Leipzig are going back to where they belong. Friday said so.
