Fast Start, Soumah Gets It Rolling
Six minutes in, and Sirius were already ahead. A scrambled situation at a corner fell to Mohamed Soumah, the centre-back turned into a bit of a goal threat this season, and he stabbed it home for his fifth in eleven starts. Rough way for Göteborg to start a game they came into with four changes already forced by their coach.
It didn’t get any easier for the visitors either. Isak Bjerkebo, playing wide, sprinted past Kolbeinn Thórdarson down the left and slid a low ball into the box, and Robbie Ure — Allsvenskan’s top scorer, and about the last name any defense wants to see arriving in the six-yard box — got there ahead of August Erlingmark to make it 2-0. Fifteenth of the season for Ure, and about as predictable a poacher’s finish as you’ll see.
Larsson Pulls One Back, Then Sirius Pull Clear Again
Göteborg did get something before the break. Sam Larsson, one of the new faces given a first start, converted a penalty right at the end of the first half after Tobias Heintz was fouled, and for a moment it looked like Göteborg might have a route back into the game. They actually controlled a fair chunk of the second half too, without ever really threatening Sirius’s goal in any meaningful way.
Then Sirius did what Sirius have been doing all season — took their chance when it mattered. Marcus Lindberg received the ball off another Bjerkebo assist just outside the box and absolutely leathered it into the net, a proper worldie that even the Göteborg camp had to admire. 3-1, and with the game as good as decided, substitute August Ljungberg pounced on the rebound from a Bjerkebo shot late on to make it 4-1 and put the finishing touch on the afternoon.
What It Means Next
Nineteen matches unbeaten now for Sirius, and the gap at the top just keeps growing — eleven points clear of second place with a game in hand, a lead that’s starting to look less like a title race and more like a coronation. For Göteborg, sitting 13th, it’s a result that keeps them safely away from any relegation worry but does slip them further from the pack just above. Sirius are next up against Helsingborg on 3 August.
