That is what you get sometimes when two clubs who know each other this well meet this early, before the rhythm of the campaign has established itself, before anyone is fully sharp. Context first. CSKA came into this as the side with the stronger recent form between the two. Slavia had their moments. The home crowd at the Shalamanov — capacity 25,556, a proper stadium for a proper derby — made their presence felt when their side went forward. A couple of half-chances in the first half that came to nothing. CSKA pushed late with the confidence of a team that had been winning in Europe and felt they had the quality to find a goal. They did not find one either.
Both sides had approached the summer differently. Slavia had four defeats in their last six Parva Liga games at the end of last season — a poor finish that dropped them down the table when they might have pushed for European qualification. CSKA had the same number of defeats in their final four, a late wobble that cost them a higher position. So both clubs come into the new season with things to prove and things to put right. A draw between them on day one does not help or hinder either club in isolation. But drop points at home in a derby — Slavia will feel that more, given they were the home side — and it can become a talking point by the end of the month if the results do not improve around it.
CSKA move into their European campaign with one eye still on the second qualifying leg. That fixture coming up means their squad management across the opening weeks of the league will need to be careful. Playing in European qualifying and keeping domestic form alive is the kind of challenge that mid-table Bulgarian clubs sometimes find more difficult than expected.
For Slavia, no European distraction. Just the league. Eleven weeks to find the consistency that last season deserted them. A derby draw on the opening day is not a disaster. It is one point from a possible three against a direct rival. The question is what comes next.
