Sporting 0-0 Vitória: Alvalade Frustrated in Costly Draw

Sporting CP vs Vitória de Guimarães

Six Wins in Seven. Then This.

Sporting CP had won six of their last seven Liga Portugal matches. They score at least twice in most home games. Vitória de Guimarães came to Alvalade in seventh place, without a win in four away games.

It ended 0-0.

Not what the home fans expected. Not what Sporting needed with the title race in mind. One point. All that pressing, all that possession, all that expectation — nothing to show for it.

Sporting Had Everything But the Goal

The hosts controlled the game. Trincão and Pote found pockets repeatedly. Geny Catamo drove forward from the right throughout. Luis Suárez led the line, held up play well, but was never given a clean chance to turn and shoot.

Hidemasa Morita and Daniel Bragança ran the midfield. The ball moved. Maxi Araújo pushed forward from left back. Set pieces were delivered. Corners kept coming. Alvalade grew louder with each near-miss, then quieter as the second half wore on.

Charles — the Vitória goalkeeper — was the difference. He kept his shape, dealt with crosses, and made the saves he needed to make. Visiting teams do not often leave Alvalade with a clean sheet. He made sure they did.

Vitória Were Set Up to Not Lose

Rúben Amorim — now back from his stint at Manchester United and rebuilding at Vitória — set up his side with clear instructions. Stay compact. Break quickly. Do not give Sporting space in behind.

It worked almost perfectly. Thiago Balieiro and Óscar Rivas were disciplined and physical at centre-back. Beni and Diogo Sousa anchored the midfield and made it hard for Sporting to play through the lines. The few counter-attacks Vitória launched were not clinical enough — Samu had one run in the second half that came to nothing — but the plan was always about defending first.

Noah Saviolo, the young Argentine winger, was bright when he had the ball. A couple of quick combinations with Miguel Nogueira gave Sporting something to think about. But Vitória were not here to win. They were here to not lose. They managed that.

What It Costs Sporting

Three games left. Sporting sit top — but Benfica are close and will not be dropping points by choice. A draw at home to seventh-placed Vitória is the kind of result that can haunt a title challenge.

Fresneda, Simões and Hjulmand all remain absent through injury. That limits options. Fotis Ioannidis — their sharp forward who has contributed significantly this season — was also unavailable. Four key absences at once. Rui Silva barely had to make a save and had nothing to do in the second half. That tells you how little danger Vitória posed going forward. But Sporting could not convert their dominance.

Quaresma, Inácio and Debast were solid at the back. The problem was always at the other end. When chances come and do not go in, sometimes the game just stays 0-0. That happened here.

The Bigger Picture

Two-time defending champions. Favourites going into this. A home record that has been formidable all season. And yet Vitória held them to nothing.

In 55 meetings between these two clubs, Sporting have won 36. Vitória have won seven. Twelve draws. Tonight added one more to that draw column.

The title will not be decided here. But dropped points at home always narrow margins. Three games to go. Everything still possible. But Sporting need to start scoring again.
