A Dream First Appearance
Some debuts you never forget. Quwan Plaatjies certainly won’t forget his — the young striker scored a hat-trick on his very first professional appearance, leading Stellenbosch to a 3-1 win over Marumo Gallants and finally getting Gavin Hunt’s side off the mark for the season.
It was a result both teams badly needed. Stellenbosch had opened their campaign with a disappointing 1-0 home defeat to AmaZulu, then followed it up with an entertaining 3-3 draw at Polokwane City — one where they’d actually led by three goals before conceding late chances handed the advantage away. Gallants, meanwhile, had started their own season with a goalless draw against newly-promoted Kruger United, so both sides came into Friday night at the Danie Craven Stadium still searching for a first win of the campaign.
Plaatjies Takes Over
Plaatjies wasted no time making his mark. He opened the scoring in the 13th minute, and just fifteen minutes later he doubled his tally to make it 2-0, giving Stellenbosch complete control of the game before the break. He wasn’t finished either — early in the second half, in the 54th minute, he completed his hat-trick to put the result well and truly beyond doubt, capping off an afternoon that any young striker could only dream of for a first taste of senior football.
Gallants did pull one back through Thapelo Dhludhlu in the 81st minute, giving their travelling supporters something to cheer, but by that point the game was already decided, and Stellenbosch saw out the closing stages comfortably to secure the win.
What It Means Next
It’s a huge night for Plaatjies personally, and an equally important one for Stellenbosch, who move off the foot of the early table with their first three points of the season. For Gallants, still searching for their own first win, it’s a tough way to open the campaign, and they’ll need to regroup quickly with the rest of the early-season fixtures coming thick and fast.
