FIFA World Cup 2026 | Group D, Match 32 | Friday, 19 June 2026 Seattle Stadium (Lumen Field), Seattle, Washington | Referee: TBC
Christian Pulisic did not play. He sat in the stands in a dark jacket, watching his teammates do exactly what they needed to do without him.
The United States beat Australia 2-0 and qualified for the knockout stage of the World Cup on home soil. Cameron Burgess put the ball in his own net in the 11th minute. Alex Freeman headed in the second just before half-time. Australia barely threatened. USA barely needed to. The whole thing felt controlled and professional from start to finish.
Six points from two games. Group D won. Round of 32 confirmed. Pochettino exhaled.
Pulisic had been kicked in the left calf during the Paraguay win and spent four straight days not training fully with the group. Right up to kickoff there was uncertainty. Then Pochettino confirmed he was unavailable — “still so swollen”, the manager said — and USA had to find a way without their captain. They found a way.
The first goal arrived almost immediately. Folarin Balogun — who had scored twice against Paraguay — drove down the left and whipped in a cross from a dangerous angle. It was always a difficult delivery for the Australian defence to deal with. Cameron Burgess, trying to cut it out, could only direct it past his own goalkeeper. 1-0 USA in the 11th minute. The stadium, packed with American supporters, was already bouncing.
Australia had actually registered the first shot of the game — Toure tested the USA goalkeeper in the opening minute, a sign they had come to compete rather than simply contain. But that early chance was as close as they came in the first half. The Socceroos sat deep, the same approach that had served them so brilliantly against Türkiye, but against USA at home the execution was not the same.
The second goal came in the 43rd minute. Freeman — the Brooklyn-born, London-raised midfielder who chose USA over England in 2023 — arrived at the back post to meet a cross and headed home. VAR reviewed the goal for a potential offside. The check lasted several minutes. The flag stayed down. 2-0. USA were into the dressing room with the job effectively done.
Popovic made three changes at half-time for Australia. Volpato came on for Leckie in the 61st minute and tested the USA goalkeeper directly with a shot across goal. Metcalfe had an effort on target in the 65th. Irvine came on in the 78th. But USA, content with their lead and wary of injuries, recorded only one shot in the entire second half. They did not need another. Australia finished with an xG of 0.32 for the whole game. That is not a team that threatened to score.
The substitutions USA made late on told you everything about where Pochettino’s head was. Sergio Berhalter came on for Pepi in the 74th minute. Giovanni Reyna replaced McKennie in the 90+6th. Harrison Wright on for Balogun at the same time. Protecting bodies. Managing fitness. Preparing for what comes next.
The Yellow Card for Chris Richards in the 90+3rd minute — serious foul play — is a concern. He will be suspended for the final group game against Türkiye unless there is an appeal. Given USA have already qualified, that match becomes a rotational question rather than a survival one. Still, losing Richards from the defensive setup for even one match is not ideal.
But the headline is this: USA into the knockout stages of their own World Cup. Seventh time they have made it. First time on home soil. The crowd at Lumen Field gave them a standing ovation at full time. Men who have grown up watching other countries host these moments finally getting to be part of one themselves.
Pulisic is expected to return for the Türkiye game. His calf assessment continues. If he is fit for the Round of 32, USA go into that match with a full squad, momentum, confidence, and a home crowd that is only going to get louder.
Turkey lost their second group game as well on Friday, meaning USA have already won Group D. Their Round of 32 opponent will be a third-place finisher from another group.
