Glatzel Opens It, Then Besio Takes Over
Perfect way to close out the summer for Wolfsburg. Robert Glatzel, one of two big new signings featured in this one, got things moving in the 9th minute, and three minutes later Alessio Besio doubled the lead — the Swiss forward faking his way past Soualhia at the edge of the box before curling a shot into the bottom-right corner. Tidy finish, and the kind of goal that makes a good first impression fast.
Besio wasn’t done there either. Souza got around a challenge from Marvin Peersman and slipped a short pass to Besio, who found the same finish he’d used minutes earlier — feint, then curl it home — to make it 3-0 in the 35th minute and give Tobias Strobl’s side total control of the game heading into the break. With the lead already comfortable, Wolfsburg’s back line had license to push forward and create rather than just defend, and they spent the closing stages of the first half doing exactly that, even if a couple of good final balls from Rexhbecaj and Mæhle didn’t quite find a finisher.
Telstar Get One Back, But It’s Too Little Too Late
Telstar came out with more purpose after the break, stringing passes together and looking more like themselves for the first time all afternoon. It paid off in the 73rd minute — Emirhan Demircan worked his way past Mæhle and lifted a ball into the box, and Soufiane Hetli made no mistake, blasting it past a helpless Koeman to pull one back and make it 3-1. It was a goal that came too late to matter, though, and Wolfsburg saw out the closing stages without much alarm.
What It Means Next
A promising send-off for Wolfsburg ahead of their first 2. Bundesliga campaign in three decades, with seven of the eleven starters here being summer arrivals as the club rebuilds under new boss Tobias Strobl. The Wölfe now turn their full attention to the season opener on 8 August. For Telstar, who finished 14th in the Eredivisie last season, it’s a respectable showing against second-tier opposition from a bigger league, even if the result went against them in the end.
