Job done. Nothing flashy. Nothing dramatic. Just a clean sheet, a controlled performance, and a place in the Cyprus Cup final.
Apollon Limassol held APOEL to 0-0 in the second leg at the GSP. They had done the hard part two weeks earlier — winning the first leg 4-2 at home. Wednesday night was about managing the tie. Killing the game. Not losing. They did not lose.
Final aggregate: 4-2 to Apollon. They face Paphos FC in the Cup final.
APOEL needed to score four goals to go through. Even two or three would have set up a nervy finish. Neither happened. Apollon sat deep, stayed organised, and gave their opponents very little to work with from start to finish.
The home side pushed from the opening minutes — no real choice, given what they needed. They pressed high, tried to get in behind Apollon’s defensive line, and looked for any mistake they could exploit. The GSP crowd was behind them early. The noise was there. The chances were not.
The clearest moment of the first half came in the 21st minute. Phillipp Kuhn — Apollon’s goalkeeper — had to produce an excellent close-range save to keep things level. That was it. That was the biggest moment APOEL created in 45 minutes against a side protecting a two-goal aggregate lead. Not enough. Not nearly.
Malekkidis almost gave Apollon a goal before halftime — came close from a position where he might have expected to do better. It did not go in, but the fact that the away side were threatening at all said something about how comfortable they were in this game.
Second half was quieter. APOEL kept trying but the urgency was fading. You could see it in the way they were moving — not quite as sharp, not quite as direct. Apollon kept closing down the spaces. Every time APOEL tried to build something, there was a yellow shirt in the way.
Escriche had a chance in the 68th minute for Apollon — a counter-attack that almost produced a goal on the night. It did not, but the point stands: Apollon came close to scoring while APOEL were chasing the game. That tells you how the second half went.
The final whistle came. No drama. No late scramble. Apollon saw it out without sweating too much at the end.
Context for the first leg is worth knowing. Two weeks ago at Apollon’s ground, APOEL were beaten 4-2. Pedro Marques scored twice — in the 35th and 88th minutes. Josef Kvida added a third in the 64th. APOEL got two back through Poursaitidis and Laifis but it was never enough to change the picture. The tie was done before the second leg even kicked off, really.
Apollon came to Nicosia knowing that. A draw was sufficient. A loss by one or two was still sufficient. Even a 3-0 loss would not have been enough for APOEL. Apollon managed the occasion well and never looked like they were going to throw it away.
Their opponents in the final will be Paphos FC. They came through the other semi-final by beating AEL Limassol 3-1 in the second leg — 5-2 on aggregate. This will be Paphos’ third consecutive Cyprus Cup final appearance. They won it in 2024, lost to AEK Larnaca in 2025, and now get another shot at the trophy.
For Apollon, a Cup final is significant. Their head-to-head record against APOEL across all competitions shows 23 wins for Apollon against 22 for APOEL from 82 meetings — essentially equal. Beating them across two legs to reach a final is no small thing.
The winner of the Cup final between Apollon and Paphos will also qualify for the Europa League first qualifying round. That is the extra motivation sitting on top of the trophy. European football on the line.
APOEL are out. They put pressure on in the first half, had one clear moment through Kuhn’s save, and could not produce anything more than that against a side that already had the tie won. It is a disappointing end to their cup campaign — especially at home, needing goals, in front of their own supporters.
Apollon held firm. Kuhn was good when he needed to be. The defensive shape did not crack. And now they wait for the final.
