Burnley 2-2 Aston Villa: Villa Drop Crucial Points

Burnley vs Aston Villa Premier League

Three Days After Istanbul Booking. Already Paying the Price.

Thursday night Villa beat Nottingham Forest 4-0. McGinn brace. Buendía everywhere. Europa League final confirmed. The whole city was celebrating.

Sunday they went to Turf Moor. A relegated Burnley side. Six straight defeats going in. Empty seats all around the ground.

They came away with a draw.

2-2. Champions League football next season is not confirmed. Two points dropped against a team already down. Emery will not say it publicly but the European final preparations got in the way of doing the basics at Burnley.

Anthony in Eight Minutes. Early Damage.

Burnley scored inside eight minutes. Jaidon Anthony. Nothing complicated about it. He got the ball, drove at the Villa backline and finished. Villa’s defenders were slow to react. The kind of goal you do not expect to concede but also the kind that happens when your head is somewhere else.

Bizot was in goal instead of Martínez. Emery rested his first-choice keeper with Istanbul three weeks away. That made sense. The backline also looked reshuffled. Maatsen, Kamara, Bogarde all starting. Rest for the regulars.

The problem is you still have to actually play the game.

Barkley Levelled. Watkins Made It 2-1.

Villa improved. Barkley came good just before half-time. A flick header. Clever movement, sharp touch. 1-1 at the break. Villa back level without really deserving to be.

Second half they took control. Watkins came on and scored in the 56th. His movement, his finish. Classic Watkins. 2-1. Villa in front. Istanbul still three weeks away. Normal service resumed.

Then Flemming equalised in the 59th minute. Three minutes after Villa had taken the lead. Burnley’s response was immediate. Zian Flemming — the same man who will face Villa’s Championship playoff opponents if Millwall go through — struck from range and it went in.

2-2. Flemming celebrated like it was a cup final. For Burnley, already down, already planning for the Championship, it basically was.

Villa Pushed Late. Could Not Find It.

The last 30 minutes were Villa trying to win. Buendía had a shot. Douglas Luiz came on. Buendía again. Amdouni had a chance for Burnley at the other end that Bizot dealt with.

Nothing went in. 2-2 final whistle. Turf Moor that had been mostly quiet all afternoon suddenly found its voice for a few seconds.

Villa had 68.7% of the ball across the game. Thirteen shot attempts. Four on target. Burnley had thirteen attempts too. Five on target. The stats make it look even. It was not that even. Villa had the quality and threw it away.

The Champions League Picture

Villa are fourth. Two games left. The gap above and below them is tight.

They needed three points at Turf Moor to put one hand on a Champions League spot. Instead they have one point. Newcastle, Spurs and Manchester United are all watching. The top four is not settled.

Istanbul is real. May 20. Europa League final against Freiburg. That is the priority for Emery and everyone at the club knows it. But dropping two points to a relegated side because your team is half-rested and half-distracted is how Champions League places disappear.

Two games left. Tottenham away in the next one. Then Arsenal at Villa Park on the final day. Both difficult. Both necessary.

Emery rotated because he had to. He would do the same again. But standing at Turf Moor at full time having drawn 2-2 with Burnley, the cost is clear.
