Cambodia 2-0 Hong Kong: Historic First Win for the Koupreys

Cambodia vs Hong Kong

FIFA International Friendly | Tuesday, 9 June 2026 Phnom Penh National Olympic Stadium, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

This one mattered more than the scoreline suggests.

Cambodia had never beaten Hong Kong in their previous eight meetings. Five wins for Hong Kong. Three draws. Cambodia — zero. Tuesday evening in Phnom Penh changed that. Two goals, one in each half, a clean sheet, and the most significant result this fixture has ever produced for the Koupreys.

Cambodia won 2-0.

The ASEAN Championship starts in July. This was the final preparation window. Coach Sreysok and his staff needed a result to build on, needed to know this group could handle pressure from a side ranked above them. Hong Kong had beaten Mongolia 2-0 just days earlier and arrived in Phnom Penh with confidence.

They had none left by full time.

The first goal was the key moment. On the right, Sor Rotana received the ball and surged forward the way he has been doing all season — direct, confident, always looking to combine. He crossed low into the box. Yudai Ogawa arrived through the middle and finished. The Phnom Penh crowd went up. Cambodia in front. A lead they had never held against this opponent before.

The match settled into a pattern after that. Cambodia dominated possession and kept Hong Kong pinned back. The Dragons tried to get Juninho Junior and the attacking players involved in combinations further up the pitch but Cambodia’s midfield structure held firm. Wai Wong and the Hong Kong creative players were kept quiet for long stretches.

The second goal came from Sorachna Sophanat in the 90th minute. Late. Decisive. Rotana involved again — the cross, the run, the connection — and Sophanat turned it in to seal the win. Job done. The stadium celebrated.

Cambodia 2-0 Hong Kong. First-ever win in this fixture.

For Cambodia, the context is important. They drew 1-1 with Hong Kong in November 2025. They beat Bhutan 4-0 five days before this. They are building something under their current setup — a blend of locally-developed players and eligible diaspora talent that has given the squad more quality than at any point in recent memory. Ogawa, Sophanat and Rotana as the attacking core gives them real options going forward.

Their ASEAN Championship group in July is tough. Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam and one playoff qualifier. These are not walkover opponents at this level of Asian football. But coming into that tournament off back-to-back wins, having beaten a side that had never lost to them before — that changes the mood in a squad. Confidence is not nothing.

Hong Kong have their own issues to address. They went into this match with two losses and a win in their recent run — defeat to Singapore, defeat to India, then the Mongolia win. The pattern is inconsistent. They had chances to make the game tighter in the first half but Cambodia’s goalkeeper was not seriously tested. The second half was worse. Conceding in the 90th minute after pushing for an equaliser tells you how the final stages went.

In eight meetings now — Cambodia zero wins, Hong Kong five, three draws. One of those statistics no longer holds. That counts for something regardless of competition level.
