Muñoz scored in the 40th. Fayzullayev equalised at 60. Díaz put Colombia back in front at 65. Campaz sealed it in the 90+9.
That is the match. Three goals. One equaliser. One moment of history for Uzbekistan. One comfortable win for Colombia in the end.
Colombia go top of Group K. Uzbekistan go into their next game knowing they competed and can compete. There is a difference between those two outcomes and both clubs feel it.
Muñoz. Díaz Assist. First Half Goal.
Colombia dominated the ball in the first 45 minutes. Uzbekistan sat in a 5-4-1 block and soaked it up. Cannavaro had set them up to not lose rather than to win. It almost worked for 40 minutes.
Then Díaz started drifting inside. Up to that point young right wingback Behruzjon Karimov had done well limiting him on the outside. When Díaz moved centrally the picture changed.
The goal came from a sumptuous Díaz assist. The delivery was perfect. Muñoz arrived at the back post and got on the end of it. 1-0. Reward for the better team in the first half.
At half-time Uzbekistan had not managed a single shot from inside the box. Cannavaro came in needing a change of approach. He got one.
Uzbekistan Made History
60th minute. Fayzullayev equalised.
It was the first goal Uzbekistan had ever scored at a FIFA World Cup. Their first ever appearance at the tournament. First goal. The reaction from the Uzbek section at the Azteca said everything. A moment nobody from that country will forget.
The goal was fortunate. Vargas could not deal with the initial effort. The ball broke to Fayzullayev who tapped it in. Fortunate or not, it counted. History is history.
For five minutes — 1-1. The match balanced. Uzbekistan believing.
Díaz. Goalkeeping Error. 2-1.
Five minutes after the equaliser. Luis Díaz scored.
The shot was not his best. Weak by his standards. Yusupov should have held it. He did not. The ball went in. 2-1 Colombia.
Two goals. Two goalkeeping errors. One from each side. Vargas at 1-1. Yusupov at 2-1. Both keepers having difficult evenings in front of the biggest crowd either had played in front of at World Cup level.
Campaz. Hernández. Done.
90+9. Substitute Hernández chased a long ball that most players would have given up on. He stayed with it. Got to the byline. Whipped a cross into the box that the ESPN commentary called a striker’s dream.
Campaz headed it home. 3-1. Game over.
Before that Karimov hit the crossbar from distance with Vargas beaten. A consolation goal would have given the scoreline a different look. The crossbar said no.
Colombia win. Colombia top of Group K. Next game June 23 against DR Congo. Uzbekistan face Portugal on the same day.
What Both Camps Take From This
Colombia won. It was not comfortable. Uzbekistan equalised and pushed hard in the second half. Lorenzo’s side needed a moment of individual quality from Díaz to regain control. They have that quality. When it matters they use it.
Uzbekistan made their World Cup debut. Scored a goal. Made it 1-1 at the hour mark. Lost 3-1 but competed in a way that nobody should dismiss. Cannavaro has built a team that is difficult. Portugal will not find this easy on June 23.
