FIFA International Friendly | Sunday, 7 June 2026 Nature Energy Park, Odense, Denmark | Referee: Sigurd Smehus Kringstad
The match never finished. That is the first thing to say.
Denmark led 2-1 and were in complete control when the game was abandoned at 79 minutes. A delay had started in the 65th minute because of an injury to Christian Eriksen. The match resumed briefly — they got to 79 minutes — and then it was called off entirely. The reason was not officially announced but given what happened to Eriksen at Euro 2020 at this same stadium, with this same crowd, nobody inside Nature Energy Park needed an explanation for why the atmosphere changed completely.
The result stands as 2-1 to Denmark.
Patrick Dorgu scored in the 13th minute. Joakim Maehle made it two in the 36th with Kasper Høgh providing the assist. Viktor Tsygankov pulled one back for Ukraine on 44 minutes — Yaremchuk laid it off, Sudakov played it through, and Tsygankov was one-on-one with the goalkeeper and finished. Half-time: Denmark 2-1 Ukraine.
The second half had been going fine. Substitutions came — Daghim for Dorgu at 61 minutes, Rasmus Kristensen for Bah at the same time. Artem Dovbyk replaced Yaremchuk for Ukraine. The game was ticking toward a comfortable Denmark win. Then Eriksen went down.
That is where the match changed in ways that statistics cannot capture.
Eriksen has been at the centre of European football’s most harrowing moment in recent memory. June 12, 2021. The Parken Stadium. His cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening Euro 2020 group game against Finland, broadcast live to the world. He survived, got a defibrillator fitted, and came back to play at the highest level. He has been at Manchester United, then Barcelona, then back in Denmark’s squad as one of the senior figures in a rebuild. He is 34 years old and still starting internationals.
When he went down at Nature Energy Park on Sunday, Nature Energy Park is in Odense — this is not the Parken in Copenhagen where it happened — but that does not matter. Every Denmark supporter and every player on that pitch knew immediately what image was in everyone’s mind.
The delay lasted 14 minutes. They resumed. Then at 79 minutes, the match was abandoned.
Before all of that, Denmark had been excellent. Dorgu’s goal in the 13th minute came from direct pressing and quick combination play in the final third — the Manchester United left back cutting inside and finishing cleanly. Maehle’s goal was simpler — Høgh played the pass, Maehle struck hard from distance and Trubin could not keep it out. Two goals in 36 minutes. Denmark were dominant.
Ukraine had their moments. Tsygankov’s goal just before half-time was a good move — Sudakov’s through ball was the key action, splitting Denmark’s centre backs and releasing Tsygankov in on goal. Maverick football from a player who has been one of Ukraine’s most consistent performers this season. He took it well.
The second half, before the delay, had Ukraine looking to build on that. Dovbyk came on. Denmark made their changes. The game was open but Denmark were the more comfortable side. Then the delay. Then the abandonment.
Brian Riemer did not speak at length about the Eriksen situation in his post-match comments. He thanked the medical staff and expressed relief. The specifics of Eriksen’s condition were not publicly shared immediately. The Danish football association confirmed the result would stand.
Denmark ranked 20th in the world — judged by many as the best nation absent from the World Cup. They missed out after losing the play-off penalty shootout to Czechia. That continues to sting. But this window gave them two good results — 0-0 with DR Congo on Wednesday, and this 2-1 over Ukraine that was heading toward a comfortable win until the circumstances changed completely.
Ukraine are going to the World Cup. They qualified and are in Group F alongside Germany, New Zealand and another side. Tsygankov’s goal here was important for his confidence. Dovbyk coming on showed Ukraine’s striker depth. But their preparations ended on an evening that nobody in Odense will quickly forget.
