Wagner Strikes Early, Chávez Answers With a Stunner
Bayern’s final pre-season tune-up before Saturday’s Supercup against Borussia Dortmund didn’t start the way Vincent Kompany would’ve wanted. Just five minutes in, Bara Sapoko Ndiaye misplaced a pass under pressure, and Yannik Wagner pounced, outrunning Dayot Upamecano for a simple finish to put Heidenheim 1-0 up. Kompany had gone with a youth-heavy lineup to start — Arijon Ibrahimović, Felipe Chávez, Wisdom Mike, Ndiaye, Tim Binder and Maycon Cardozo all in from the off — and for a few minutes it looked like the inexperience might cost them.
Chávez had other ideas. In the 25th minute, the 19-year-old Peruvian stepped up for a free-kick from the top of the box and absolutely rifled it in, beating both the wall and the crossbar to level things at 1-1. It was the kind of moment that’s been building all summer for Chávez, who’s quietly turned himself into one of the more talked-about young players in Kompany’s squad. Heidenheim struck back before the break regardless — Julian Niehues produced a genuinely magnificent volley to restore the hosts’ lead and send the Bundesliga 2 side into halftime 2-1 up, a scoreline that raised more than a few eyebrows given the gap in level between the two clubs.
A Frightening Pause, Then Bayern Take Control
The second half started well for Bayern on the scoreboard, at least — Ibrahimović leveled it from the penalty spot within moments of the restart, converting after Niehues had fouled Binder in the box. But the game’s biggest moment had nothing to do with the score. Not long after, Jamal Musiala went down and appeared to briefly lose consciousness, and the match understandably lost its rhythm entirely as everyone on the pitch waited anxiously for him to be looked at. Both sides visibly eased off afterward, playing with far more caution as the shaken atmosphere settled.
Once the game found its footing again, Bayern’s class off the bench told. Kompany brought on Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Díaz shortly after the hour mark, and the front three made an immediate difference. Olise’s trademark cross from the right found Díaz for a simple finish in the 78th minute to put Bayern ahead for the first time all night, and Nathaniel Brown added a fourth in the 84th minute to take advantage of a tiring Heidenheim side and put the result well beyond doubt.
What It Means Next
It’s a fifth straight pre-season win for Bayern, who overturned two separate deficits to get there, and Bayern executive Max Eberl said afterward the game had been valuable simply for building rhythm ahead of the season, with every extra minute on the pitch a positive. Chávez and Binder in particular caught the eye among the youngsters given a real chance to impress. The far bigger story to emerge from Heidenheim, though, will be the scare around Musiala, and everyone connected with Bayern will be hoping for good news on his condition before Saturday’s Supercup date with Dortmund.
