Scott Parker left earlier in the week. Michael Jackson took charge for the first time on Friday night. It went badly.
Burnley lost 3-1 at Elland Road. Already relegated. Now beaten again. Their one league win since October sits there as a reminder of how this season has gone. Leeds, meanwhile, are nine points clear of the drop zone and could barely have asked for a better evening.
Anton Stach scored in the eighth minute. Noah Okafor made it two. Dominic Calvert-Lewin added the third before Burnley pulled one back late on. Done before the hour mark, really.
The opening goal was something. Stach picked up the ball 25 yards out, saw space, and squeezed a low shot into the near corner off the post. Martin Dubravka did not see it coming. Neither did anyone else. Eight minutes gone and Elland Road was already loud.
Burnley did not manage a single shot in the entire first half. Not one. Jackson was standing on the touchline trying to organise a team that looked completely lost without a permanent manager, a clear identity, or any real confidence. The players trudged forward without purpose and Leeds just kept the ball away from them.
The second goal killed whatever hope Burnley had of making it competitive. Calvert-Lewin intercepted a terrible pass from Bashir Humphreys — who was having a night — drove forward and found Jayden Bogle with a backheel. Bogle crossed. Okafor hit a half-volley sweetly into the bottom corner. Beautiful goal. Simple in the way that only good teams make things simple.
Calvert-Lewin made it three minutes later. Ao Tanaka hit a long-ranger that Dubravka spilled. The Leeds striker got to the rebound first, bundled it over the line, celebrated in front of his own fans. His eleventh Premier League goal of the season. The match was over as a contest at that point.
Burnley did get one back. James Ward-Prowse had a shot that deflected off Ao Tanaka and crept past Karl Darlow. Something. A consolation in a game that had been decided before half time.
It barely registered in the context of what had happened before it.
Jackson made changes — Amdouni came on for Humphreys, Broja replaced Flemming. Stach finally came off for Aaronson after lasting longer than expected given the original plan was apparently 45 minutes maximum. Ethan Ampadu picked up a booking late on. None of it changed anything.
Elland Road added eight minutes of stoppage time — partly because of treatment needed for Dubravka after the third goal. The noise stayed. Leeds ran the clock down without any real anxiety.
The context for Leeds is genuinely positive right now. Five unbeaten in the league. Nine points above the drop zone. They went to the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley — lost narrowly to Chelsea — but the league position is what matters and they are safe in all but name. Next up is Tottenham on Monday and a point there would make it mathematically confirmed.
Daniel Farke has done a decent job. Last season they finished 14th. This campaign looks like ending in a similar position but with the added story of a cup run and a more comfortable margin from the relegation places. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been the key — eleven goals from a striker who arrived with questions about his fitness and form. He has answered them.
For Burnley, Friday was another chapter in a grim story. One win since October. Relegated weeks ago. Manager gone mid-week. New man in charge with no time to prepare. The result was never in doubt from about the 35th minute. What comes next for them in the Championship will be a rebuild from a very low base.
