A Goalless Hour, Then Everything Changes
For a full hour at Bank Respublika Arena, Sabah’s Champions League hopes hung by a thread. They’d lost the first leg 2-1 in Denmark, James Bogere scoring twice for AGF before Veljko Simić pulled one back late on, and the return leg stayed stubbornly goalless deep into the second half — Joy-Lance Mickels forced an early save from Mads Hedenstad, but neither side could find a way through for long stretches.
Then, almost out of nowhere, the whole tie flipped inside thirty minutes. In the 59th minute, Simić collected the ball and finished low into the corner to put Sabah 1-0 up on the night, level on aggregate and suddenly right back in it. Eight minutes later, Aleksey Isayev’s cross found Steve Solvet, who powered a header into the bottom-right corner to make it 2-0 and put Sabah ahead on aggregate for the first time in the tie.
Mickels and Severina Complete the Rout
AGF tried to respond with fresh legs and a bit more ambition on the ball, but Sabah were ruthless from there. Mickels, who’d been guilty of a couple of earlier misses, made amends in the 78th minute, finishing from a rebound to make it 3-0 and put the result beyond any real doubt. Substitute Xander Severina, on just since the 58th minute, rounded things off in style — Zedadka advanced down the right and slipped a neat pass into his path, and Severina buried it low into the corner in the 89th minute to complete a 4-0 rout.
The numbers backed up just how one-sided the second half had been. Sabah outshot AGF 29-14 across the full match, with 20 of those shots and eight on target coming after the break alone. Referee Willy Delajod booked three AGF players as the visitors’ frustration grew, but by the closing stages the result was already a formality.
What It Means Next
Sabah advance 5-2 on aggregate and move into the Champions League playoff round, where they’ll face the winner of Hapoel Be’er Sheva and Crvena Zvezda for a place in the group stage proper — a remarkable achievement for the reigning Azerbaijani champions. For AGF, the European road continues, just in a different competition — they drop into the Europa League playoff round, where a daunting task awaits against Benfica, who thrashed Hearts 6-1 in the opening leg of their own third-round tie.
