Norway have never won a World Cup knockout game. They went out to Italy in 1938. They went out to Italy again in 1998. Three appearances in the tournament across their entire history and three exits at the first knockout hurdle.
On Tuesday in Dallas, that changed.
Erling Haaland scored in the 86th minute. Oscar Bobb played the ball down the right channel to Patrick Berg, who squared it across goal, and Haaland arrived with the whole net in front of him. His flick almost did not make it over the line. It did. Norway 2-1 Ivory Coast. Their first knockout win. Into the Round of 16. Brazil next week in New Jersey.
Alfie Haaland — Erling’s father — was visible in the stands. Emotional, overwhelmed, watching his son score the goal that did something no Norwegian team had ever done before. A generational moment for that family and for that country.
History also surrounded Ivory Coast going into this. This was their first-ever appearance beyond the group stage of a World Cup. They had never won a knockout game either. Someone was always going to make their history tonight. Norway got there first.
Antonio Nusa had given Norway the lead in the 39th minute with a curling effort from outside the box that left Yahia Fofana with no chance. It was the kind of finish that reminds you Nusa is still only 21 and already playing at a level most professionals never reach. He drove onto the ball, opened his body, and bent it into the top corner. Beautiful goal.
The first half had moments before that. Haaland had two chances that went begging — Sangare made a superb block on one, Sørloth headed a corner and could not generate enough power on another attempt from close range. Norway were the better side but Ivory Coast, in their 4-1-4-1, held their shape and gave their opponents little comfort.
After the break, Ivory Coast pushed. Their substitutions changed the energy entirely. In the 60th minute, Wahi came on for Bonny. Diakité replaced Inao Oulaï. At the same time. Both players fresh, both causing Norway problems with pace that the backline had not dealt with all evening. In the 74th minute Amad Diallo — the Manchester United winger who had come on as part of those changes — drove forward from the left, cut inside onto his right foot, and hit a clean shot into the corner. 1-1.
Diallo raced away. The Ivory Coast supporters inside Dallas Stadium made their presence known. The momentum had completely shifted. For large portions of the next ten minutes, Norway were second best. Ivory Coast had an extraordinary chance — a cross from the right that should have been converted for a tap-in at the back post — but there was no Ivory Coast player arriving at the right moment. The ball rolled across the face of goal and out.
That miss felt significant in real time. It felt even more significant four minutes later.
Berg received Bobb’s pass on the right side. His square ball across goal was perfectly weighted. Haaland arrived. His flick almost did not cross the line. It did. 2-1. Norway were ahead again. Dallas exploded on one side and fell silent on the other.
Seven minutes of additional time were signalled. Ivory Coast had everything to play for. They pushed. Nyland — who had tipped a Diallo shot over the bar with a fine diving save earlier in the second half — dealt with everything that came at him. The final whistle went. Norway are through.
Norway is in its fourth World Cup and will next play five-time champion Brazil in the Round of 16 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Solbakken will feel his decision to rest Haaland and Ødegaard against France — the match that ended 4-1 — was vindicated completely. Both arrived in Dallas fresh. Both made the difference. Ødegaard drove the game in midfield throughout. Haaland waited until the moment that mattered and provided.
For Ivory Coast, the exit hurts but the achievement remains. Their first World Cup knockout appearance. They came from behind in the second half with real quality. Amad Diallo’s equaliser was one of the better individual goals of the knockout round. They had chances to win the match. The scoreline does not tell the whole story.
Ivory Coast had 41% possession to Norway’s 50%, 14 attempts to Norway’s 9, five shots on target to four. The Elephants were not outplayed. They were simply outscored.
