IFK Norrköping arrived in Östersund with one of the best records in the Superettan. They left with all three points and barely broke a sweat getting them.
Two-nil to the visitors. It was Norrköping’s third 2-0 win from their last four matches in the division. The consistency up and down this squad is remarkable. They defend well, they create enough, and when chances come they take them. Östersund had no answer for it.
The context before kick-off was worth noting. Norrköping were relegated from Allsvenskan at the end of last season after fifteen years in the top flight — a long and painful fall for a club of their stature. They dropped into the Superettan alongside Östers IF and IFK Värnamo, all three unable to survive their first division campaigns. Coming into this match they sat second in the Superettan table with a 58% win rate from twelve games, only nine goals conceded all season. This squad is built to come straight back up.
Östersund, for their part, were not in terrible shape heading in. Sitting mid-table, twelve games played, nine wins from their twenty scored. The problem was the defensive record — seventeen goals conceded, more than most of the teams around them. Against a Norrköping side this organised and clinical, that was always going to be a problem.
Östersund’s previous match had been a 1-1 draw with Ljungskile on June 14 — they had one shot on target in that game, which said something about their attacking productivity right now. The shots on target total was a running concern. Against Norrköping’s defence, shots on target were not going to come easily.
The first goal killed any real contest in the match. Norrköping took the lead with a clean, direct move that exposed exactly the vulnerabilities Östersund’s backline had been showing all season. The goal came early enough to give the home side a real problem — chasing the game against a team that is comfortable defending a lead is never a good position to be in.
The home side tried to respond. They had moments — brief periods of possession, a couple of decent set piece deliveries, the kind of individual efforts that come when a team is searching for something they cannot quite find. But Norrköping’s defensive shape was solid throughout, limiting Östersund to almost nothing in terms of genuine chances on Marcus Haage in the Norrköping goal.
The second goal confirmed it. Clean finish. Away end celebrating. The home crowd went quiet in the way crowds do when they have seen enough to know the afternoon is over.
Norrköping managed the final stages professionally, rotated possession, and did not give Östersund the spaces needed for a comeback. The Peking boys — as their travelling support calls them — leave Jämtkraft Arena with exactly what they came for.
The result keeps Norrköping firmly in the promotion conversation. Their 21 goals scored is among the best in the division. Nine conceded across 13 games is comfortably the best defensive record in the Superettan. The goal difference is building. Other clubs around them have been dropping points and Norrköping have been picking them up.
For Östersund, the defeat extends a frustrating run at their own ground. The home form in recent weeks has been inconsistent — the draw with Ljungskile, now this. The squad has talent and the 20 goals scored season is evidence of attacking output. But seventeen conceded in thirteen games means they cannot rely on that output alone. The defensive side needs tightening before the season gets away from them.
The Superettan table after Round 13 has Norrköping in the promotion picture with every reason to believe they are going back up. From the Östersund perspective, mid-table consolidation remains the realistic aim with the second half of the season still to come.
