FIFA International Friendly | Friday, 5 June 2026 Volgograd Arena, Volgograd, Russia | Referee: Nenad Minakovic
Russia had not won in three games going into Friday. A 1-0 defeat to Egypt in Cairo the week before was the most recent low point. There were things to address. Volgograd was the place to address them.
They did it in the first half. Letchii Sadulaev scored in the 14th minute. Alexei Miranchuk made it two in the 20th. Two goals in six minutes, game effectively over before it had barely started. The third came in the second half and Russia won 3-0.
A routine afternoon. Not spectacular. Not particularly memorable. But after the Egypt defeat, it was exactly what the squad needed.
Burkina Faso arrived in a poor run of form. They lost 1-0 to Egypt the week before — the same Egypt team Russia had just played — managing just one shot on target all match in Cairo. The Stallions had not won in four games. They were not going to the World Cup. In many ways this was two sides in similar positions — both outside the tournament, both trying to maintain some kind of form and cohesion for future cycles.
The opening 20 minutes showed the gap in quality on the day. Russia pressed high and won the ball back quickly. When Sadulaev got his goal it came from exactly the kind of situation Russia had been building toward — a direct run, a clean contact, the ball in the net before the Burkina Faso goalkeeper could adjust. Sadulaev had been one of the more consistent performers in Russian football domestically and this was him transferring that form to international level.
Miranchuk’s goal six minutes later was the one that settled the game. The former Atalanta and Torino midfielder — playing for Lokomotiv Moscow this season after his European spell — has always had quality in his feet and his left-footed finish to make it 2-0 was exactly that. Composed, placed, accurate. Mohamed Ouédraogo picked up a yellow card for Burkina Faso in the 43rd minute as frustration built. Half-time arrived with the home side already out of sight.
The second half had less urgency about it. Russia made their substitutions and managed the game down. Burkina Faso tried to find something — Dango Ouattara was their most dangerous player when he had the ball and he created one or two moments that caused brief alarm — but Russia’s defensive organisation held firm and the expected third goal eventually arrived.
Russia win 3-0. Burkina Faso leave Volgograd empty-handed.
There is a strange quality to Russian football right now. They have been banned from UEFA and FIFA competitions since February 2022. Over four years outside competitive international football. They play friendlies — against nations that will agree to face them, outside of European and World governing body structures. Earlier in this run they put together an 18-game unbeaten streak that included an 11-0 demolition of Brunei — their biggest ever win. Then form tailed off. They won just once in their last four going into Friday.
The squad that plays these games has evolved significantly. Some players have moved to clubs in Asia and the Middle East. Others have stayed in the Russian Premier League. Maksimenko in goal, Krugovoi and Morozov in defence, Barinov in midfield — these are players building careers in circumstances no one could have fully prepared for. They are getting older and younger replacements are coming through with no international competitive pressure to test them properly.
Winning 3-0 against Burkina Faso on a Friday in Volgograd does not fix any of that. But it gave the stadium something to celebrate. The players something to build on. Glushenkov, who played the full match, showed the kind of direct running that Russia need from their wide players going forward.
Next up for Russia is Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday. Another friendly. Another chance to sharpen what they have and introduce younger players to the environment.
For Burkina Faso, next on the schedule is a return to AFCON qualification preparation. They missed the World Cup and the focus shifts back to the African game. A 3-0 defeat in Volgograd will not define their summer.
