From 0-6 to 1-0, Same Two Teams
Football’s weird sometimes. Seven days earlier, Djurgården absolutely trashed Västerås 6-0 at 3Arena, Kristian Lien grabbing a hat-trick in the process. Same two teams met again at Hitachi Energy Arena, and this time it went the other way entirely — Västerås won 1-0, and honestly, it wasn’t especially close.
Djurgården kept faith with the same eleven that had steamrolled VSK a week prior. Västerås made changes of their own — Daniel Stensson back from injury, new signing Daryl Tschoumy-Nana getting his first minutes, backup keeper Lukas Jonsson also involved for the first time. Didn’t take long to see the game had a different shape to it than the reverse fixture. Bonaventure Lendambi got free in the box in the 24th minute — Hampus Finndell switched off, didn’t track his run — and Lendambi rose to head it home. 1-0.
Total Domination the Other Way This Time
From there it was almost entirely Västerås. Djurgården, so dominant a week earlier, just couldn’t get anything going — losing duels all over the pitch, no rhythm to their build-up, nothing resembling the side that scored six the last time out. Ten minutes after the opener, VSK nearly doubled the lead too. There was a late blow for Djurgården as well: Miro Tenho picked up a yellow card in the closing stages, ruling him out of next weekend’s Stockholm derby against AIK.
Djurgården coach Jani Honkavaara didn’t try to hide his frustration afterward, telling TV4 that Västerås had been very direct and made things difficult, adding that his side created chances of their own but needed to convert at least one to change how the game played out. Västerås boss Alexander Rubin, on the other hand, was still processing the turnaround — going from conceding six to winning 1-0 against the same opponent inside a week. He admitted the attacking football wasn’t always pretty, but said he was genuinely delighted with how hard the team worked for the result.
What It Means Next
The win lifts Västerås up to sixth, just a point behind third-placed Djurgården, who still have a game in hand on most of the pack. For Djurgården, it’s a reminder of how quickly form can flip in this league — six goals one week, none the next — and they’ll need to regroup fast with a derby against AIK on the horizon, minus Tenho through suspension.
