Second Half Started. Two Goals in Two Minutes. Nothing Changed.
0-0 at half-time. Both teams fine with it at that point.
Then the 46th minute. Rafa Silva scored for Benfica. The Luz woke up. Lead. Finally.
Then the 48th minute. Pau Víctor equalised for Braga. Two minutes later. The lead gone before anyone had settled into it.
1-1. That is how the second half started. That is how the game finished.
Benfica had 13 shots. Braga had 4. The stats tell you who dominated. The scoreline tells you what it produced. One point each. Season penultimate round. Nothing resolved.
Rafa Silva Did What Rafa Silva Does
46th minute. The ball came to him in a pocket of space just inside the box. He did not need much invitation. Low finish, right foot, past Horníček. 1-0.
Rafa has been doing this for years at the Luz. The kind of goal he scores so often it almost feels routine. When Benfica are pushing for something late in a match and the ball drops to him, you back him nine times out of ten.
The Luz was loud. Benfica pressing for a second.
Pau Víctor Took It Back Immediately
48th minute. Braga broke quickly down the left. The move was sharp. Pau Víctor arrived into the area and finished with composure. 1-1.
Two minutes. That is all Benfica held the lead for.
Braga were exhausted by this point in the season. Europa League semi-final exit at the hands of Freiburg on Thursday — losing 3-1 on the night, 4-3 on aggregate. Then straight back into Liga Portugal three days later. The travel, the emotion, the physical load of that Freiburg defeat — all of it present at the Luz on Monday night.
And still they equalised. Braga did not come here to sit in and accept a defeat. They scored with four shots. That is efficiency.
Benfica Hit the Woodwork. Braga Held On.
After the 1-1 the Luz kept pushing. Ivanovic brought the best out of Horníček in the second half. Prestianni drove at Braga’s backline. Barreiro tried from range.
Benfica hit the woodwork. The details of which player, which moment — it went unrewarded and the goal would not come. Trubin barely needed to work at the other end. Three saves across the entire game. Braga came, scored, and defended their point.
Otamendi and Ríos were both absent. Suspension for both. The backline rearranged. Whether that mattered is hard to say when Benfica had 13 shots and could only score once.
The Title Is Already Gone
Porto won it on Saturday. André Villas-Boas’ men. José Mourinho on the other side. The old story of Portuguese football retold again — Mourinho chasing Porto’s shadow.
Benfica are second. 76 points. Two games left. The math does not work for the title. Porto have too many points.
What is left for Benfica is finishing second with dignity and preparing for next season. Mourinho’s future is the bigger conversation. He has said his decision will come at the end of the season. Tuesday he has a press conference. The Luz will want answers.
Braga are fourth. Europa League semi-finalists this season. Still alive in the fight for European spots. They came to the Luz a bruised side after Freiburg and left with a point that keeps their position secure.
In 64 meetings between these two clubs, Benfica have won 36. Braga have won 15. Thirteen draws. Monday night added one more to the draw column. Neither side will remember it long.
