Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Leeds United: Tel’s Stunner Undone by Costly Red Card

Tottenham vs Leeds United Premier League

He Scored It. Then He Gave It Away.

Mathys Tel curled one into the corner from outside the box in the 50th minute. Stunning finish. Tottenham ahead. The survival fight suddenly felt manageable.

Twenty-four minutes later Tel fouled Ethan Ampadu inside the area. Penalty. Calvert-Lewin scored it. 1-1.

Same player. Thirty minutes apart. Gave Spurs the lead and gave it straight back.

Tottenham stay 17th. Two games left. West Ham one point below them. This was meant to be the win that made things safe. It was not that.

The First Half Was Tense

Kinsky saved well from Rodon in the 21st minute. His former teammate. Header from a corner, going in, Kinsky tipped it onto the post. Big moment. Leeds would have led.

Porro’s effort was cleared off the line by Struijk on the other end. Palhinha missed from close range. Both teams had their moments. Neither took them.

Leeds thought they had won a penalty when Udogie appeared to foul Calvert-Lewin. VAR checked. Offside in the build-up. Ruled out.

Danso was booked in the 41st. Aaronson got fouled more times than he would have liked. Frenetic. Physical. No goals.

0-0 at half-time. De Zerbi not happy in the technical area. Farke calm. Leeds had been the better team across the 45 minutes.

Tel Gave Spurs the Lead

50th minute. Tel picked the ball up just outside the box, took one touch and curled it into the corner. Right foot. Far post. Darlow did not move. He could not have saved it.

The Spurs end was loud. Finally. De Zerbi punched the air. Richarlison sprinted over to celebrate.

The lead held for 24 minutes. Just 24 minutes.

Tel Fouled Ampadu

74th minute. Tel went in on Ampadu inside the area. The contact was clear. Referee Gillett pointed to the spot immediately. No VAR needed.

Calvert-Lewin placed it to Kinsky’s left. Kinsky went the right way. Not quickly enough. 1-1.

Tel put his hands on his head. He had every right to. The performance that could have been remembered as the goal that kept Spurs up became something else entirely in those 24 minutes.

Kinsky Kept Spurs In It

90th minute. Longstaff drove in from midfield and struck it. Hard, low, going in. Kinsky reacted and pushed it onto the crossbar. Extraordinary save.

Had that gone in it was 2-1 to Leeds and Tottenham were practically relegated. Instead it stayed level.

Then Maddison went down in the area in stoppage time. Arms wide. Looking for a penalty. Nmecha had got close to him. Gillett waved it away. Spurs appealed. Nothing given.

Full time. 1-1. Both sets of fans furious for different reasons.

The Relegation Picture

Tottenham 17th. 38 points. West Ham 18th. 37 points. One point between them. Two games left.

Spurs play Chelsea at home next weekend. Then Brentford away on the final day. West Ham play Brighton and Newcastle.

None of those games are easy. West Ham beating Brighton at Stamford Bridge is not straightforward. Spurs beating Chelsea at home is not straightforward either.

This 1-1 was supposed to be the result that gave Spurs breathing room. It did not do that. It moved them one point ahead of West Ham instead of four. The fight is not over. Not even close.

Leeds go into the final two games with nothing to play for except pride and finishing position. They secured survival before kick-off. Farke’s side came here, went toe-to-toe with a Spurs side fighting for their lives, and left with a point. A professional performance from a team in a comfortable situation.
