Braga 2–1 Freiburg: Late Dorgeles Winner in Europa Semi

Braga 2-1 Freiburg

Braga were level. A saved penalty. A Freiburg equaliser. Ninety minutes almost gone. Then Mario Dorgeles came off the bench and won the whole first leg in stoppage time.

His 92nd-minute goal gave Braga a 2-1 win. Their first Europa League semi-final in 15 years. A lead to take to Germany next week.

The Estádio Municipal — the Quarry, dug into the side of a mountain in northern Portugal — absolutely erupted.

The first eight minutes had been cautious enough. Two semi-finalists feeling each other out, neither willing to commit too early. Then Braga went ahead and the whole thing changed.

Makengo failed to deal with a deep cross. His defensive header was awful — went straight to Víctor Gómez, who controlled it, rolled it across the box, and Tiknaz slid in to finish. 1-0. Eight minutes gone. The Quarry was rocking.

Freiburg looked dazed. For a few minutes they could not get out of their own half. Braga pressed relentlessly and made life miserable for Schuster’s side with the ball.

Then Freiburg broke the press. Defensive mix-up from Braga on the halfway line — Jan-Niklas Beste burst through into the box and picked out Vincenzo Grifo on the left. The captain steered it home. His sixth European goal of the season. 1-1 in the 16th minute and Freiburg had an away goal.

That changed things. Freiburg had a reason to sit back and protect what they had. Braga needed to break them down again.

The penalty arrived before half time and it should have made it 2-1.

Lienhart was penalised for holding Lagerbielke — VAR reviewed it, Lienhart picked up a yellow card, spot kick given. Zalazar stepped up. Atubolu went to his right and saved it. Brilliant stop. Freiburg ran to celebrate like it was a goal.

That save kept it 1-1 at the break. Braga had the better of things but Freiburg had the away goal and the penalty stop. Going into the second half it felt like Freiburg were slightly ahead in the tie despite being level on the night.

The second half was tight. Atubolu was busy — he kept Braga at bay across the 70s with a couple of decent stops. Eggestein had the best Freiburg chance on the counter, forcing a sharp save from Horníček. Neither side found a clear breakthrough.

Ricardo Horta — four goals in the campaign before tonight — had gone off injured in the 25th minute. A big loss for Braga. Dorgeles came on in his place and spent most of the second half working hard without producing anything final.

Until the 92nd minute.

A ball into the box. Freiburg failed to clear it properly. Dorgeles reacted first to the rebound and fired it home from close range. 2-1. Stoppage time. First leg. That is the kind of goal that can define a tie.

He celebrated like he knew what it meant. He probably did.

For Braga this is historic territory. Their only previous Europa League final appearance came in 2010/11, when they reached the showpiece on away goals against Benfica before losing to Porto. This is their 100th Europa League proper match — more than any other club in the competition’s history. And tonight they won their first-ever European knockout tie against German opposition.

Carlos Vicens has built something real here. The squad depth showed — Horta goes off injured and within 70 minutes Dorgeles has won the first leg. Pau Víctor, speaking after, said something simple: they have no indispensable players. That is a squad that wins European matches.

Grifo was the best player on the pitch for Freiburg. Six Europa League goals this season, composure in big moments, dangerous every time he had the ball. Julian Schuster’s side were not out of this — Freiburg coach said at full time the team were worthy of a draw and had the better chances in the second half. That might be true. But they conceded in the 92nd minute and now go home a goal behind.

Second leg is in Freiburg on Thursday 7 May. The Europa League final is in Istanbul on 20 May. Braga are one win away.
