Forty-two years. That is how long Nottingham Forest had waited to be back in a European semi-final. Thursday night at the City Ground, they made the wait worth it.
Chris Wood scored from the spot in the 71st minute. Lucas Digne’s handball. VAR check. Penalty given. Wood stepped up and hammered it past Emiliano Martinez. One-nil. The City Ground went absolutely wild.
Forest take that lead to Villa Park next week. Aston Villa have to score at least once. An all-English Europa League final is still possible — but Villa need a result they did not get tonight.
The first half was tight. Both teams set up cautiously, neither wanting to gift the other an early advantage in a two-legged tie. Villa had the better of the early moments — Morgan Rogers forced a save inside two minutes, which set the tone for an opening period where the visitors looked slightly more comfortable.
Forest’s best moment of the first 45 came from Igor Jesus. A volley, well struck, clean connection — Martinez threw himself across goal and kept it out with lightning reflexes. Outstanding save. Without it the game might have been different before half time.
Elliot Anderson was fortunate to stay on the pitch. His sliding challenge on Ollie Watkins caught the Villa striker with his studs — high, late, and reckless enough that Pinheiro could have shown a red card without much argument. He did not. Anderson stayed on. That ended up being important.
Half time: 0-0. Tight, competitive, nothing between the sides.
The second half opened up a bit more. Forest pushed higher. Villa tried to use Watkins’ movement and Rogers’ creativity to find a way through. Neither side was creating with real clarity, but both were trying.
Then the penalty moment arrived. Hutchinson drove to the byline and whipped a cross into the box. Digne tried to stop it. The ball hit his arm — outstretched, in an unnatural position. Pinheiro waved it away initially. VAR intervened. Referee went to the monitor. Penalty given.
Wood stepped up. No hesitation. Hit it hard into the left corner. Martinez guessed right and got nowhere near it. 1-0. Forest first European semi-final in 42 years — and they were winning it.
Vitor Pereira immediately brought on Zach Abbott to replace Aina, who had picked up a knock. Forest reorganised, sat a little deeper, and looked to see the lead out.
Villa pressed. McGinn, Rogers, Watkins all trying to find an equaliser that would change the dynamic going into the second leg. Bogarde and Tielemans kept working in midfield. But Stefan Ortega in the Forest goal was not seriously tested in those final twenty minutes. The defence — Milenković and Morato at centre-back — held firm.
Five minutes of stoppage time. Villa could not find a way through. Full time: 1-0.
This result means something beyond just football tactics and aggregate scores. Nottingham Forest last reached a European semi-final in 1984. Brian Clough’s side. European Cup. Different era, different world. Thursday night at the City Ground was a link back to all of that — a club that was once the best in Europe reminding everyone they are not finished yet.
Vitor Pereira deserves enormous credit. He took over a Forest side that had finished in the top half of the Premier League but had not been expected to go deep in European competition. They beat serious opposition to get here. This semi-final against Villa is not a fluke. They earned it.
Chris Wood has been quietly brilliant all season. Seven Europa League goals in 11 appearances coming into this match. The penalty was ice cold — composure under maximum pressure, in front of a full City Ground, in a European semi-final. That is not easy. He made it look easy.
For Villa, the task next week is clear. One goal does not separate these sides. The tie is not over. But they needed something from the first leg — an away goal, a draw, anything to avoid going to Villa Park behind — and they did not get it.
Kamara was missing for Villa, which weakened the midfield. Bogarde started in his place and gave everything but the engine Villa have with the Guinean international fully fit was not quite there tonight. Onana also not fit to start.
Forest go to Villa Park next Thursday with a one-goal lead. First all-English European final since the 2019 Europa League? Possibly. But Villa Park will be full, loud, and very much up for it.
