Canada 1-1 Bosnia: Larin Earns Historic First World Cup Point

Canada vs Bosnia and Herzegovina

FIFA World Cup 2026 | Group B | Friday, 12 June 2026 Toronto Stadium, Toronto, Canada | Referee: Maurizio Mariani (ITA)

Michael Bublé performed before kick-off. Alanis Morissette too. Canada’s first home World Cup match in history started as a celebration and for most of the night looked like it was going to end as a disappointment.

Then Jesse Marsch sent on Cyle Larin in the 76th minute. One hundred and twenty one seconds later, Larin scored. Canada’s first ever World Cup point. Toronto Stadium went delirious. The whole country went delirious.

Final score: Canada 1-1 Bosnia and Herzegovina. The result they needed to stay alive in Group B.

Jovo Lukic had put Bosnia ahead in the 21st minute with a header — his first international goal. It came from a set piece, delivered into the box, and Lukic got above the Canadian defence and sent it past Dayne St. Clair. Bosnia had their lead. Canada spent the next 55 minutes trying to find a way through.

The absence of Alphonso Davies hung over everything. Canada’s best player, injured before the tournament, watching from home. His pace, his directness, the way he opens spaces — all of it missing on the night they needed it most. Jonathan David tried. Tajon Buchanan created moments. Richie Laryea drove at the Bosnia defence in the second half and forced Vasilj into a save, then hit the crossbar from close range with a deflected effort that looked like it was going in. The crowd groaned. It kept looking like it was not going to happen.

Then Larin.

He came on as a substitute for Theo Oluwaseyi. Took a touch to find his bearings. Then Philip David — who had been one of Canada’s better players throughout — played the ball into the box. Larin read it. He arrived at the right moment and finished.

One-nil becomes one-one. Seventy-eighth minute. His first World Cup goal. The second Canadian player after the captain to score at a World Cup.

The stadium erupted in a way that had not been heard at a Canadian football match before. Not like this. Not with these stakes. Not in a World Cup group game at home.

Bosnia tried to regain the lead. Kolasinac was replaced by Burnic in the 84th minute. Nikola Katic picked up a yellow card in the 90th minute — a pull back on Larin as he tried to break clear. The kind of foul that summarised how desperate things were getting at the back for Bosnia in those final minutes. Osorio came on for Eustaquio in the 90th. Canada pushed for a winner. Larin had another shot in the 90+6th that went close.

Full time: 1-1.

Canada now have their first ever World Cup point. In 1986, they lost all three group games without scoring. In 2022, same result — six games, six defeats across two tournaments, zero points. Tonight: a point. At home. In front of their own crowd. Against a Bosnia side that made them work for every inch of it.

Bosnia had left Edin Džeko on the bench. The veteran forward has never scored at a World Cup but his presence would have given them more threat in the second half when Canada pushed high. Lukic’s goal was the quality individual moment they needed — a clean header, composed on the biggest stage of his career. For long stretches they defended well and created from their transitions. The xG at 0.98 to Canada’s 1.25 tells you it was close. The draw was fair.

Canada face Qatar on Thursday. Bosnia face Switzerland the same day. Group B is alive. Two points is achievable for Canada if the performance builds on this. Davies might recover. If he does, the whole dynamic of their remaining games changes.
