Iberia 1999 had the lead at half-time. They could not hold it.
Spaeri came back in the second half, scored the equaliser, and walked away from Mikheil Meskhi with a point that felt more significant for them than the one Iberia dropped felt for the champions. One-one. The leaders let two points slip at home and Torpedo Kutaisi — sitting second on 26 points — will have noted it immediately.
This was a Tbilisi derby of sorts. Both clubs use the Mikheil Meskhi Stadium complex — Iberia 1999 with the main 22,754-capacity ground, Spaeri with a secondary pitch nearby that holds just 1,000. For this league fixture, the main venue hosted the meeting between the two. Different environments. Same city. Local pride always adds something.
Iberia 1999 came into Round 17 as clear leaders. Nine wins, three draws, four losses from sixteen matches. Thirty points. Four clear of Torpedo Kutaisi and Rustavi who are both on 26. The champions — they claimed their third title last season under Guga Nergadze — were expected to manage this one at home against a seventh-placed side without too much trouble.
Spaeri had other ideas. They came in with five wins, five draws and six losses. Mid-table. Nothing to lose. Their recent form had been mixed but Jean — their early top scorer of 2026 — had been giving opposition defences problems throughout the campaign.
The first half was Iberia’s. They took the lead before the break, controlled possession, and went into the dressing room with a lead that felt comfortable. Half-time: 1-0. Everything in order.
The second half was where it all changed. Spaeri came out with more urgency and more belief. Their attacking reinforcements — added in the winter window specifically to give them more options going forward — started causing Iberia’s backline problems. The equaliser came. Iberia pushed for a winner in the closing stages but Spaeri defended the draw and took the point back to their end of the city.
For Iberia, the frustration is real but the damage is limited. They stay first on 31 points after this draw. Torpedo Kutaisi and Rustavi are on 26. The gap remains five. But dropping points at home to a seventh-placed side — and specifically a side from the same stadium complex — is not the kind of result the defending champions want to produce in the middle of the season.
Nergadze will look at the second half and find things to address. Iberia had beaten Spaeri earlier in the season and the head-to-head had been theirs before Friday. The draw leaves the H2H at 1-1 for the 2026 season between them.
For Spaeri, this is a point they will treasure. Their away record this season — they go to the main Meskhi ground while usually playing at the smaller pitch — is not strong. Coming here and earning a draw against the champions, after going behind at half-time, shows something about the character in this squad. Jean’s contributions throughout the campaign and the squad depth added in January have made them a more unpredictable opponent than their seventh-place standing suggests.
The Erovnuli Liga season runs until December. Plenty of football left. Iberia’s lead is healthy. But it is not comfortable enough to take games like this one lightly.
