They Needed a Win. They Got Six Against Them.
Lens came to Charléty needing a result. Their best striker Aude Gbedjissi was absent. Three teams were fighting relegation going into the final day. Lens were level on points with Montpellier.
They were 2-2 at half-time. Still in it. Still alive.
Then Paris FC scored four in the second half.
6-2. Lens are relegated. After one season in the top flight, they go back to Seconde Ligue.
The First Half Had Everything
Paris FC dominated from the start. Mendy opened the scoring. Garbino added a second. 2-0 and Lens looked gone.
Then Connesson pulled one back. Then Smaali made it 2-2 before half-time. Two goals in the first half for a side without their main striker, away from home, on the final day of the season. In that moment they gave themselves a chance.
The dressing room at half-time must have felt electric. Down to Lens now. Win the second half, survive.
Paris FC Were Merciless After the Break
Whatever chance Lens had disappeared quickly.
Jedlinska. Korosec. N’Dongala. Scott. Four goals in the second half. Paris FC were clinical, direct, and completely in control from the moment the second half started.
Lens had no answer. Without Gbedjissi — their top scorer, their main threat — the attack had no focal point. They had shown fight in the first half. The second half was a different story.
The RC Lens Féminin live blog confirmed it at full time: officially relegated. Eleventh place in Arkema Première Ligue. Next season, Seconde Ligue.
What It Means for Lens
Sarah M’Barek had said before the game everything had to be perfect. “We have the resources and the qualities to do it,” she told the press. Across town, PSG were beating Strasbourg 2-0. The maths were always going to be tight.
When Lens levelled at 2-2 before the break, there was a moment where it felt possible. Paris FC have beaten Lens 2-1 earlier in the season, 1-0 in the Coupe LFFP and 2-0 in the Coupe de France. Every meeting this season was close. Not this one.
Gbedjissi’s absence cannot be overstated. She has been the player who makes this team dangerous. Without her, Lens could equalise twice in the first half — showed heart — but could not sustain it against a second-half Paris FC performance that was completely different to the first 45 minutes.
Relegation after one season is brutal. There is no other word for it.
Paris FC Go Into the Play-Offs
Paris FC finish fourth. They will face PSG in the Arkema Première Ligue play-off semi-finals on 16 May. PSG at home, after finishing third.
Every meeting between these two this season has been decided by one goal. The PSG report noted that directly — losses of 2-1, 1-0 and 2-0 for PFC in the three previous encounters. None of those were comfortable for either side.
The play-offs are a completely different format. Single-leg knockout, not over two legs. One bad half and the season is over.
PSG go in on the back of a 2-0 win over Strasbourg in their final regular-season game. Paris FC go in having just beaten Lens 6-2. Both in form. Both motivated.
